This screen shows all the people’s GimmeThis lists which you have permission to see.  You can view the GimmeThis lists by clicking on the name.  The date to the right of the person’s name is the last time their GimmeThis lists have been updated.  If the person has red stars wrapping the date to the right then the GimmeThis list has been updated since the last time you logged in.

Each individual person has to grant you permission to see their GimmeThis lists.  If you can’t see someone’s GimmeThis list you need to ask them to grant you permission to view their GimmeThis lists.  See Grant List Permission.

    Logout

Click this button to log out of the GimmeThis website.  It is very important you log out of the GimmeThis website when you are done so no one else can get a sneak peek at what has been bought from their GimmeThis list.  One of the best features of the GimmeThis website is the ability to hide what has been bought from a person’s GimmeThis list.

    Manage Account

    Messages

This screen allows you to view your GimmeThis messages.  People can send anonymous messages about specific items on your GimmeThis lists or general messages.  The only way these messages would not stay anonymous is if the message sender signs their name or gives obvious hints about who it is.  Otherwise these messages are completely anonymous.

For example on little Ralphie’s GimmeThis list he has put an item “Red Ryder BB gun” and his parents see this item and write him a specific message about the item saying “You’ll shoot your eye out.”  Ralphie has no clue who sent the message.  He can also reply and still have no idea who it was that sent the message.  This messaging system can be valuable to find out specifics on an item such as clothing size, color, quantity, or anything you need to know about the item in order to buy it.

    Reading Messages

If you have any GimmeThis messages available to be read there will be a number in parentheses.  The number represents how many new GimmeThis messages you have to read.  The GimmeThis messages are listed in chronological order of the sent date and time.  Unread GimmeThis messages are in lighter blue while read GimmeThis messages are in darker blue.  To read your GimmeThis messages:

    Click the messages button

The View Your Messages screen will list your GimmeThis messages.  Each GimmeThis message is prefaced by either “General Message,” “Specific Message” or “Reply” followed by the sent date and time.  Please note the times are in PST so if you are in the EST the time listed will be three hours earlier than the GimmeThis message was actually sent.  For more information see General Message and Specific Message.

Click on the GimmeThis message you would like to read

The first line will be the title of the GimmeThis message you saw on the previous screen.  The line under the tan line is the content of the GimmeThis message

You can also reply to the GimmeThis message by clicking the “Reply” button (See Replying to a GimmeThis Message) or delete the message by clicking the “Delete” button.  Both buttons are above the message content and below the tan line.

To read other GimmeThis messages click on the “Messages” button to the left.

    Specific Messages

You can write a specific message to anyone you have permission to view their GimmeThis lists and have items on their GimmeThis lists.  This type of GimmeThis message is for the purpose of asking specific questions about an item on a GimmeThis list anonymously.  When the person receives a specific message when the read it they will see exactly what item the specific message is for.  For example, little Ralphie’s list has an item “Red Ryder BB gun” and his parents want to ask if he wants extra ammunition with that.  So they can write Ralphie a specific message asking him.  Ralphie will see a specific message sent about item: Red Ryder BB gun and then the message content.  Every reply will show what item is being discussed.

General workings of a GimmeThis list

There are a few things you need to remember about your GimmeThis lists. You can never create a list with a date in the past. Once your GimmeThis list’s event date is past you can no longer add or edit items on your GimmeThis list. Likewise other people which have permission to view the items on a GimmeThis list with an expired event date cannot check off items from the GimmeThis list.

    Creating a GimmeThis list

Click on the “GimmeThis Lists” button to view your GimmeThis lists

Click the “Add a New List”

Give your GimmeThis list a name in the “List Name:” text box. Your list will by default list your name before the title of your list so you do not need to put your name in the GimmeThis list name.

Input the date in the date text box. Please be sure to stick to the format – YYYYMMDD – this means your date should start with a 4 digit year followed by a two digit month (so if it’s for February it should be 02) and finished with a two digit day (same principle as the month if it’s a single digit lead with a zero). Or you can click the icon and use the calendar feature to pick a date. Please note, you cannot pick a date in the past.

    Click the “Submit” button

Your GimmeThis list will appear in the list screen

Adding Items to your GimmeThis List

There are two ways you can add items to your GimmeThis list. One is adding individual items one at a time. The other is importing from a prior GimmeThis list. See Importing from a prior list. Here is how to add individual items:

Click on the GimmeThis list you would like to add items to

    Click on “Add an item”

Write the name of your item, description, or whatever you want

Have fun and play around with the editing. Add colors, change fonts, bold words, etc. The buttons work similar to Microsoft Word. Make sure to highlight the words you want to edit the formatting. And be creative!

    Explaining the buttons

    - Removes formatting of highlighted section

    - To add a link to a website, highlight the words you want people to click on and click this icon. It will bring up a text box to type in the whole web address, including the “http://”

    - This eliminates a website link you have set up

When you have finished click the “Submit” button

The list of your GimmeThis groups will appear and you need to select the group you would like to view this item. You can only select one GimmeThis group. If you do not have any GimmeThis groups set up you will have a message which tells you you need to set up a group. If you want your list to stay unseen you can just click out of that screen by clicking “GimmeThis Lists” and going back into your list to add another item

Once you select a group you will go back to the edit screen and click “SubmitEdit”

The item will appear on your GimmeThis list

Importing from a Prior GimmeThis List

You can import items from a previous list into an existing list. This is intended for repeat items or to add items to a list you may not have received previously. To import items from a previous list:

Click on the GimmeThis list you would like to import items into

Click on “Import From Prior List”

Select the list you want to import items from and click submit.

Check the Import box for all the items you wish to import.

If the item was previously checked off from the previous list, but you want it to be made available to be checked off again from the current list then mark the Uncheck box for each item.

    Click submit.

You will get a screen which says Import Complete when the items have been imported into your list.

    Groups

A "group" is made up of other users on the GimmeThis website which you create. A "group" needs to be assigned to every item in your GimmeThis Lists. You can have multiple "groups" assigned to a single item. Only these users can view the item on your GimmeThis List.

For Example: Clarke has a group called "My Buds" which includes Tucker, Savannah, and Indigo. Clarke adds an item to his GimmeThis list called "Lots of treats" and assigns the group "My Buds" to this item. When Tucker, Savannah, or Indigo log into GimmeThis.com Clarke's list will appear for them to view and will see his item "Lots of treats". Now Clarke would like to add an item to his list which only Tucker can see, so Clarke creates a new group called "My Best Bud" and adds Tucker to the group. Clarke then adds an item to his GimmeThis list called "A backscratcher" and assigns the group "My Best Bud" to this item. When Tucker logs into GimmeThis.com and views Clarke's list he can now see: "Lots of treats" and "A backscratcher". When Savannah or Indigo log into GimmeThis.com and view Clarke's list they can only see "Lots of treats", because they are not part of the group which was assigned to "A backscratcher".

You select members by checking the check box to the right in the Action column. If you check some names off, you must submit the names before scrolling to the next page.

Once you are finished adding members you are ready to assign the group to your items and you can do this by going to your “GimmeThis Lists.”
